So, last night a thing happened… It was the Trans in the City Awards, an event focused on positivity & celebrating trans success! I thought I was just going along for a lovely evening, but I actually won the ‘Corporate Trans Champion’ award! If you saw my acceptance speech: I was not expecting this! The other nominees are amazing people doing very important work, so I genuinely feel honoured to be recognised in this way. If you’re involved in work that tries to make positive change for people, you categorically don’t do it for recognition. You do it because it’s the right thing to do. To try to make things better, fairer, & more equitable. Anyone who knows me, knows being in the limelight isn’t somewhere I’m comfortable, but I will always put myself forward to be a point of reference or offer positive representation for the trans community. Growing up & living through the ramifications of section 28 & seeing horrific depictions of trans people in the media meant I didn’t have a reference point; perhaps if I did I wouldn’t have spent so long not knowing who I was or thinking I was a freak because I didn’t fit what society presented as ‘normal’. THIS is why people get involved in social justice projects, or try to promote diversity, to let future generations know they’re valid & it’s okay to be exactly who they are! I should’ve thanked a lot of people when I was standing at the podium in shock; a huge thanks to @bobbi_pickard for founding @transitcuk & her work for our community & for being an inspiration. Thank you to the members of @intermediauk, whose drive & support helped me make the impact I have. I have to call out @cactinvictafc; from the committee to the team, they’re all champions of breaking down barriers in football & finally my company; @nbcuintl who have fully supported me & shown these things aren’t just tick box exercises. My manager @stevenmcgunigel has been the biggest ally, he’s an absolute gem & has encouraged me when I’ve felt overwhelmed & pushed me when I’ve needed it. There are so many more, but this is as long as War & Peace! Anyway, that’s closer to what I should have said instead of looking like Bambi in headlights! #TransSuccess (at Clifford Chance, Canary Wharf) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWWdKaPokUH/?utm_medium=tumblr -- source link
