earlymidsomermurders:Out of the little character bits the show does, this is one of my favourites….. Team Comic Collector. We learn over two eps that Tom used to collect comics and that Troy still does. I love that these two have so little in common, and that one of their few shared interests just emphasises how different they are?? Troy’s ongoing obsession with his childhood comic hero The Hawk is tied to his relationship with his dad: it has to do with his ideals of masculinity and power, and how he sees himself. For Tom, his comic collection is a thing of the past, and it wasn’t the hero who captured young Tom’s imagination but the villain: The Mekon. Fond memories of a fantasy world that are linked to a fear of “the alien”, of a malicious power beyond one’s own, fear of being taken away and losing what’s beloved and familiar… and still being drawn to that world. See this is what makes me lose it over Midsomer rewatches. This kind of micro characterisation fuckery. Midsomer is never about the characters, except when it is, for about 10 seconds per ep, and then it’s just… so good…. It’s very blink and you miss it. But they do some amazingly sound and beautiful character writing. Midsomer Murders: Season 4, The Electric Vendetta & Season 5, Market for Murder -- source link
