An indie superhero book from 1982 that had surprising impact and influence on the comics world despite the low sales, Southern Knights, about a superteam based in Atlanta, was some of the earliest work done by Jackson Guice and Chuck Wojkiewitcz before either got famous on other titles. A few ideas that later became commonplace in other comics first appeared here: the idea of a hero with mental powers able to create a “psychic blade” of mental energy, for instance, or the team powerhouse and superstrong member is a petite girl co-ed…but most importantly, the team leader is a comics nerd and superhero fanboy who uses genre savviness both to outsmart villains because of his knowledge of story conventions, and to insist everyone follow the tropes of the superhero story. To my knowledge, this is the earliest anyone ever did this idea, and there’s a straight line here to Runaways, Grayson’s Relative Heroes, and the Kamala Khan Ms. Marvel. -- source link
