Condoms are definitely something we, in modern society, take for granted. That is, if we’re not 16 year old girls in super conservative households. Or we’re drunk slutty college girls who say ‘fuckit’ cause were too drunk to find one and we wanna do just that. But where and when did condoms make their way into the realm of sex? Lets find out! It seems that condoms were being used as far back as Ancient Egypt. The later appearance of the European condom seems much more likely to be the first “condom” as we would understand it. Some believe that the first condoms were leather pouches with cinches at the end. This seems to make sense. Others record more modern versions being created by the Roman Army, who may have used the intestines of their defeated, but more likely used animal intestines. Treated animal intestines have been recorded as a major source of condoms for many years. In the 1400s, condoms were being used and promoted in Italy to prevent Syphilis. These condoms were made of linen and would have chaffed horribly if my imagination serves me well. By the mid 19th century, rubber condoms were being mass produced and sold as a substitute for animal intestine/linen condoms. Apparently some were even made of shell. Next time you eat a hot dog, just be grateful your condoms are latex now and not the casing of a good old spicy italian sausage, gross. -- source link
