otmaaromanovas:THE ALEXANDER PALACE FABERGE EGG Created by Fabergé in 1908 as an Easter gift from Tsar Nicholas II to Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, the Alexander Palace Egg consists of diamonds, ruby, gold, ivory and nephrite. As with all Faberge eggs, the Alexander Palace Egg has a ‘surprise’ in its inside, with the Alexander Palace Egg containing a gold and diamond miniature of the Alexander Palace and its gardens. The Egg is decorated with watercolour paintings of the Imperial children based off their 1906 and 1907 formal photographs set on ivory backgrounds. Each child’s portrait also has a diamond encrusted monogram of their initials. On the inside of the egg, the back of children’s miniatures have their birth date and year inscribed. The artist even managed to capture tiny details, such as Grand Duchess Anastasia’s gap teeth. The Egg, which cost over 12,000 roubles, was displayed in the Tsarina’s ‘Mauve Room’ for several years until it was confiscated during the first Revolution in 1917.The Egg is to be displayed in an upcoming Faberge exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in LondonSources:Fabergé, Alexander von SolodkoffFabergé in London: Romance to Revolution, Victoria & Albert MuseumPhotos:Wikipedia commonsImperial-Russia on Tumblr -- source link
