Striped ties (take two). I’ma try to recreate the text I took an hour to write and Instagram decided to delete. From block stripe to pin, from one stripe to five (or more), from symmetrical to asymmetrical, from wet satin to shantung, stripe ties come in an enormous variety. There is copious information on the (likely apocryphal) storied history of the stripe tie, from its origins in British militaria to its adoption by universities and (men’s) clubs and it’s supposed importation to America by The brothers Brooks. I doubt I could add substance to that body of work. So I’m going to focus on deployment. A well crafted rig has the kind of harmony of a chord, where each of the elements is in keeping with the others (and maybe just enough dissonance to create tension and interest): brown scotch grain wingtips are out of place with a tuxedo just as patent leather isn’t in keeping with a thornproof tweed suit. Following that logic, where do stripes fit? Their military origins give them chops on the formal end of the spectrum, and their adoption by men’s clubs let them stray toward the casual. Net, a diverse stripe tie rotation is the foundation of sartorial versatility. Here are some photos of my rotation. Heavily represented are Sam Hober, @egcappelli , @shibumifirenze , @vandafineclothing and @hnwlondon IGents everywhere are cringing that @drakesdiary isn’t on that list. Don’t fret, I’ve got a couple; I just don’t prefer the cut of their ties to some others. Next up: wearing multiple patterns without looking like a literal clown. https://www.instagram.com/p/B-ddT8ZJBDp/?igshid=13quuz7dndz0a -- source link
