The fact that the public, despite all available statistics and personal narratives, believe that police prevent crime, is one of the greatest magic tricks ever pulled. The police create the illusion of safety, and they do so by enacting violence. And we have subscribed to this illusion by being more incensed by witnessing harm than by the harm itself and the systems which enable it.
