laurelbay-krona: harrypotterconfessions: I don’t understand why Snapefen just can’t seem to get the reality of the situation, even almost 10 years after the fact. Snape was NOT a good person. He was spiteful and a bully. He may have been on the good side, but that was only because of Lily’s death. If Lily had not died, he would still be a Death Eater. I think for some it comes from a few things. In the same way Draco got a huge loving support because he was portrayed by the attractive Tom Felton, many people are attracted to Alan Rickman. So the movies portraying the villians more handsomely than the books immediately makes them easier to forgive for their actions. If the movies had truly made Snape look as greasy and sallow as he was described, we all would have found him gross and unappealing and seen through his unrequited love as just being one man’s obsession and never really growing up.But the other aspect, or at least for me, was when Snape was revealed to be this double agent… I was shocked. His entire story changed for me because he wasn’t who I thought. Yes he did everything for the wrong reasons, but suddenly you realized that at some point he had a shitty life (at home pre Hogwarts ) and he was capable of love (even if it later turned into obsession and overall creepiness) where I had always seen him as just such an angry bitter person, he has humanized for me. That doesn’t justify his actions but after Harry was so willing to forgive him, it makes it hard for me to hold on to a severe hate for him. Kudos @laurelbay-krona for a well-reasoned & articulated expressed post. Alan Rickman was completely the wrong choice of Snape for me. He turned so many of Snape’s lines slightly… sensual. Or at least comedic. The direction of the films twisted his bullying into an opportunity for comedy rather than the terrifying, unpredictable, irrational behaviour it was. Let’s not forget the very real effect it had on Neville. -- source link
