Gosh, it really slaps you in the face how creative danmei writers are because this is one combi I never would have thought would make sense or read well. Basically if modern startup tech + supernatural + hell is a combination that warms the cockles of your heart, this is it. This novel is exactly it!!! I laughed so damn hard at every single part like everything melded so well together it was insane! So yeah, some good ol revenge, face-slapping, a tiny bit of horror and ghosts, the king of hell, and the fact that technology makes everything better, even hell.SummaryYu Zheng Du, a gifted and talented programmer, is looking for a tech startup to stay low at due to some drama that happened when he first graduated from university months ago, and finds this small company of only 15 employees. On his first day, he’s stunned to realize that he’s the only member of the IT department and this startup is way smaller than he realized, and out of confusion he asks the person who’s bringing him around, if the role was so popular and if they desperately needed a programmer to help them develop their app, why would there be no one vying for the job? To which the man replies, “Because out of all the programmers we interviewed, you’re the one with the most amount of hair. Our boss doesn’t like balding people.”Yu Zheng Du, “…”He meets long-haired handsome fussy boss Shang Que, and prematurely signs the employee welfare and insurance contract, not knowing that he’s actually signed a contract with hell and the king of hell himself. By the time he realizes that he’s the only human in this startup and that all his colleagues are ghosts that have to be fed via the burning of paper food at lunch, it’s too late to back out. He can only resign himself to the fate of working for the king of hell…… to make an app that will automatically calculate a person’s good and bad deeds at the time of death, send them a mobile SMS and let them know what they’ll be reincarnated as in their next lives, coupled with instructions on how to get to reincarnation. Through a series of coincidences and supernatural events, another tech conglomerate boss hires him and Shang Que to get rid of ghosts plaguing his very young daughter, and at that time Yu Zheng Du, talented and genius software engineer that he is, just happened to have a prototype of an app in his phone - one that would allow others to see the ghosts around people via the camera function. From there on, Shang Que’s legally licensed company that supposedly helps people to manage their lives (specifically their afterlife) takes off.Shang Que is also sure that Yu Zheng Du likes him, all while being absolutely possessive of Yu Zheng Du XDReadNovel (Online) | Novel (Translations) | Novel (Print) - Uncensored print by Jia Fei (2022 release) | Audio DramaCharacters1. 喻争渡 Yu Zheng Du - Super talented and genius programmer who’s worshipped together with two other genius tech experts, but only online via a pseudonym that is. He takes all the ghostly involvement in his life and Shang Que, this fussy and a little childish boss, in stride, and develops many many cool apps that help the company roll in plenty of cash, so he can buy paper cash to burn for his colleagues. Has got a glib tongue and can argue his way out of any argument, but of course supported by Shang Que. He’s very well liked everywhere as well, and falls for Shang Que but doesn’t realize it, not until he realizes that Shang Que thinks HE was wooing him and then Yu Zheng Du realizes huh. He kind of likes Shang Que, even though Shang Que was a bit mistaken in the order of them liking each other.2. 商阙 Shang Que - King of the underworld. He had to move hell and the workings of the afterlife into modern society after underworld as everyone knew it collapsed and was destroyed. He’s a little vain, fussy, possessive, but also listens to Yu Zheng Du and respects him. A little vain in that he really though Yu Zheng Du was chasing him all along, but he was the one who fell for him first. His only hobby is playing RPG games on his phone, and he agrees to all of Yu Zheng Du’s business plans because it’ll give him more money to buy points and more in the game. Only likes people with hair.Other Things I Liked in the NovelThis entire novel is basically a parody of like serious Chinese folklore and also exorcism, and turning fengshui knowledge on its head - The old ways have to give way to a greater tool = TechnologyThey literally convince monks and rich tycoons and the fengshui association that indeed, why perform rituals to summon ghosts when you can just text them on your phone? Why conduct another ritual to talk to your deceased one when you can just call them? Why buy amulets and invite monks to purify a home when you can just buy an evil-eliminating air purifier? There’s A LOT to process in this novel and a lot of interesting subplots! For example, Yu Zheng Du was accepted into this prestigious tech incubator programme before he was even out of university but because he had a jealous cohort-mate who had a powerful aunt, Yu Zheng Du realized that he had to lay low for a bit at least, but Shang Que helps him to get revenge -- source link
