If there’s one thing I’ve learned in 35 years of living, it’s to enjoy this beautiful ride & be kind to everyone along the way. I feel young for how many close friends I’ve had pass away. It’s uncountable on my hands. This morning I received a message that my friend Carlos was riding his bike with another friend, collapsed & passed away. He was in good health, without any medical issues.Carlos was one of a kind. He was 22 years older than me. We first met when I was running a bike shop & he opened a book/film store next us. For the next 3 years, we chatted for 5 days a week since the shops were right next to each other & more. When I would close up on Sundays at 4PM, I would go next door & we would talk about the day, life, & have some laughs. I learned so much from him over the years & shared so many laughs until our stomachs hurt. We used to spend hours talking about life - once even into the night at a taqueria while the place closed down & we stayed on the patio. I was thinking of him yesterday while I was taking a photograph of my daughter & had his voice in my head while I framed a shot (His Mom’s name was Adeline too, but spelled with an A). He questioned everything articulately, but with an open mind. At the end of his last email to me, he wrote, “your generation straddled the pre- and post-digital world. You saw the Internet arrive and eventually take over. In some ways it’s truly democratized the world. In other ways, it has caused mass destruction of minds, attention spans and the ability to socialize between people. More Words of Wisdom from Carlos…”May your wisdom continue to influence everyone you touched. Rest easy old friend. -- source link
