wildyoungcharm: So this Justin Timberlake thing…it isn’t simply a matter of being mad because he complimented Jesse Williams’ speech and said “we are all the same.” He complimented Jesse Williams’ speech in one breath and proved that he didn’t hear a word the man said in the next. In particular, he didn’t hear this part… “The burden of the brutalized is not to comfort the bystander. That’s not our job. All right, stop with all that. If you have a critique for the resistance, for our resistance, then you better have an established record of critique of our oppression. If you have no interest in equal rights for black people, then do not make suggestions to those who do. Sit down.” - Jesse Williams JT was called out on his cultural appropriation, felt uncomfortable with it, and subsequently tried to dismiss the person who called him out with an insincere platitude. No one wants to hear about how “we are all the same” from a man who has built a career on cultural appropriation courtesy of his white privilege. No one wants to hear that from a man who stood by and did nothing while a black woman got thrown under the bus alone for a Super Bowl performance he had equal part in. Those FUBU outfits, cornrows, and declarations of “being a black man in a white man’s body” he was so fond of the 90s/early aughts clearly don’t make us the same when Janet shouldered the burden and career consequences of Nipplegate alone. So no, black Twitter didn’t drag Justin Timberlake just for praising Jesse Williams despite what some online headlines would have you believe. He got dragged for not realizing he is complicit and doubling down on his ignorance. AMEN!!!! -- source link
