cosmoetherockcat: I always do it wrong… I reject the first rule. Not a fan.“I’m not a fan.” I said.vsI said “I’m not a fan.”The sentence I constructed and spoke was a SENTENCE, complete with a period. It’s in quote marks to contain what I said, and separate it from the surrounding grammar and punctuation. Also, it seems to only apply to periods. Fuck that.“You’re not a fan?” she asked.“I’m not a fan!” I shouted. No one’s going to replace question marks or exclamation points with commas, just because the quote they’re in is part of a larger sentence. No one’s going to write “Do you see the zombies,” she asked. “You have to leave me. Just go. RUN,” she yelled, tears streaming down her face.“But Five,” you say, with a comma because your spoken sentence is not yet complete, “periods are different! Question marks and exclamation points add important tone or emphasis. Periods are neutral!”“No.” I say, ending the sentence emphatically. “No, they aren’t.”“I’m not leaving you.” I said to my friend with the twisted ankle, as the zombies close in. I end the sentence with a period, because there’s no room for debate on this matter. “We’re both getting out of this alive.” The period is important. It should not be replaced by a comma. The first rule, though broadly accepted, is stupid. I’m not using it. -- source link
