Watermarks - A Hallmark of Western PaperWestern paper-makers adopted a different process than their counterparts in China. Instead of using a flexible paper mold, they used a more rigid model. This model allowed paper-makers to etch their symbols into paper; these symbols were (and are) called watermarks. Above is a watermark from a leaf of the Euphrosynus Miscellanies.
