The word ‘Walipini’ means ‘place of warmth’ in the Aymara language of an indigenous Bolivian tribe. These greenhouses work on the principle of using nature’s resources – i.e. the earth – to create a stable-temperature environment in which a cool climate area can significantly increase the variety of crops you can produce as the greenhouse, with little or no energy inputs, provides a warm space for plants to grow in.” https://permaculturenews.org/2016/11/28/walipini-greenhouses-diy-tips/ I like this idea in theory, but then I remember the truly prodigious amounts of rain we get every winter, and I KNOW this would be flooded to the top at least once per year. Still, it’d be nice the other 47 or so weeks of the year. This would be FLOODED in Olympia. However, it would work great in Eastern WA. In high rain areas, there is a way to adapt this! Instead of digging down, use a slope as one side of the greenhouse (if a steep slope) or even just build near a slope. Every little bit of warmth reflected back from the slope helps. My mom isn’t using it anymore (she’s chicken farming instead of greenhouse gardening for sun) but her greenhouse shares its north wall with a storage building/unused barn and the south wall is semi-underground to a slope. -- source link
