Lichrot! Every wizard comes down with a case of it eventually - magic loves to change everything it touches, and wizards touch a LOT of magic, so it’s really only a matter of time before their life of spell-casting ends up changing them into something strange and bizarre. Though early symptoms of lichrot are easily ignored and sometimes even fashionable, the more the disease progresses, the more monstrous a wizard’s form can become. There is a slight stigma against lichrot in many communities, with some people erroneously believing a wizard who sports its symptoms must be bad at their wizardry. In truth, the opposite is often the case - skilled spellcasters have to risk exposing themselves to a LOT of magic to pull off their wonders, and thus are far more likely to suffer from the disease.Shadowrot is a variation of Lichrot, where the body of a given wizard is slowly consumed by darkness until only a living shadow remains. The exact cause of this variant is unclear, but it seems to be linked to a poor sense of self esteem - wizards who feel their lives have little worth often suffer acute cases of Shadowrot, disappearing into their robes until they are little more than an incorporeal consciousness animating their old clothes. -- source link
