With excitement building around the 2021 launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, I’ve been thinking about telescopes a lot. One of the coolest things about them is how differently they’re all designed. Some use lenses and can see Saturn from your back porch, others escape light pollution at the top of huge mountains so they can see the formation of stars. Some join together on Earth to make images from invisible light, and some, like JWST, take off into space so that they can search for planets with atmospheres that can potentially support life. Looking Up: An Illustrated Guide to Telescopes from Jacob Kramer and illustrator Stephanie Scholz is an informative picture book that introduces all sorts of telescopes and a bit of the science behind them.
