italianartsociety:By Anne LeaderHappy Birthday Paolo Portoghesi! The Italian architect and architectural historian was born 2 November 1931 in Rome. After earning degrees in architecture (1957) and in art history (1958) at the University of Rome, Portoghesi taught at the University of Milan and after 1980 at his alma mater in Rome. After designing several domestic buildings like the Casa Baldi (1959) and Casa Papanice (1969-70) – the latter in partnership with Vittorio Gigliotti – he turned to public buildings like the mosque and Islamic Cultural Center in Rome (1976) and the Chiesa della Sacra Famiglia in Salerno (1968). Today he is recognized as a founding father of postmodernism. Portoghesi also has designed furniture, believing interior design to be a key facet of architectural space.Reference: Christian Norberg-Schulz. “Portoghesi, Paolo.” Grove Art Online.
