laufire-writes:[ID: on the left, there’s a headshot of model Nyakim Gatwech with a wide grin, her hair down with a scarf tied on top with a ribbon, and orange background; it has small dots of stars overlayed. On the right there’s a picture of a woman’s armored torso as she gets out her sword, overlayed with a blue shiny eye and binary code. So don’t you fucking dare lie to me right now.”Leena’s backstory is one of the mysteries unraveled during the novel, so I’ll limit the information to what I’ve already revealed in other posts, such as excerpts: she was recruited as a child, out of an orphanage, by a shady organization called the Galatea by a woman referred to as The Priestess. Leena spent half her life with them, and just as the story starts she’s decided to quit, go on the run, and strike out on her own. It’s then when she has a chance encounter with the protagonist, Captain Latoya, and ends up joining a crew of fellow fugitive alongside her.As a result of her past, Leena’s social skills are more than a little rusty. She tends to come across as very awkward, humorless and standoffish, and pretty tone-deaf in delicate situations. She’s far, far better with animals or technology (like the ship’s artificial intelligence, Redstart) than with people, and it shows. Alongside her training, it’s contributed to making her in a loner, though not by choice, as it’s seen when she starts developing relationships with Latoya and the rest of the crew. It’s… a process, because she can be clingy, impatient, paranoid and extremely moody. But she craves those new connections; she’s practically starved for attention and affection, any that’d come her way.The Galatea’s mantra is that the work they do must be “devoid of pity, glory or reward”, and they demand complete obedience and devotion to the collective. Leena was, to put it bluntly, extremely unsuited for the organization. She is competent, audacious and a perfectionist, but she is also proud, sentimental, naturally curious and competitive, which got in the way. And she has a rebelius streak a mile wide; she excels at following the letter of the rules while finding small ways to be herself amidst their adoctrination. On the same vein, she’s cultivated ways of lying with the truth, but never outwardly. As a Galatea trainee Leena has many specialized skills, mostly on the questionable side of things; but one she cultivated before joining them was thievery (in fact, she and Latoya meet because Leena tries to steal from her), something that’ll come in handy during the story. She excels at physical-related tasks, and at sneaking around, hiding, eavesdropping… you name it. Losing her abilities, any of them, and feeling useless, is one of her greatest fears. She is greedy and envious, and she has a weakness for pretty and useless things, often taking them as trophies just because. And she loves the color pink.Leena is one the characters with most weight in this ‘verse alongside Latoya, as they form the central romance (it originally started as more of an ensemble story, but alas, I loved Latoya too much). I really look forward to showing you more of her, her backstory and the Galatea, as I work on Liminal States, the first installment ^-^ -- source link
