Joos van Cleve, Lucretia (1518) The legend of the suicide of Roman matron Lucretia is a theme which features in many prominent paintings, and was a historical tool used to symbolize the fall of Roman Monarchy. After being raped by the Etruscan last king of Rome’s son, noblewoman Lucretia presents herself before the Roman magistrate seeking justice. As they tarry and debate over a decision, she stabs herself in the heart before them. In legend, this act leads to the monarchist rebellion and the establishing of the Roman republic. www.TempleofApelles.com -- source link
