fromthedust:Rockwell Kent (American, 1882-1971)illustrations for Moby DickRandom House edition, 1930woodcutsAs a kid I used to go through the book looking at the images of the whales, utterly fascinated by the power and the scale of these animals. When I read the book as a young teenager it was the harpooner Queequeg who caught my imagination the most … and then his coffin saves Ishmael and I cried.Later I saw the movie and the focus changed for me again — Gregory Peck as the driven Ahab, his dead arm beckoning from the back of the whale to which he is lashed. Looking at the story now it is Kent’s woodcuts that stand out the most — they capture both the glory and mystery of this creature of the deep so beautifully. I just want to go through the book and look at the pictures again. -- source link
