Henry was put aboard a ship at St Malo bound for England but at the last minute he escaped. Later this year, Princess Elizabeth was betrothed to the Dauphin of France. Documents from Margaret Beaufort and from Edward IV exist to prove that Margaret never stopped working to permit the return of Henry’s titles and property, and for him to be allowed safe passage back to Wales. Again, in june of 1482, there was a draft pardon drawn up and discussion of Henry marrying Edward’s eldest daughter Elizabeth of York since the King of France broke the engagement he had made to marry the dauphin to the princess. Henry didn’t accept the offer. In 1483, to strengthen Henry’s claim and unite the two feuding noble houses, Elizabeth Woodville and Margaret Beaufort agreed that the latter’s son should marry the former’s eldest daughter. Henry Tudor in December publicly swore an oath to that effect in the cathedral in Rennes, France.
