Tulips worth more than gold: in the 17th century a “tulip mania” occurred in The Netherlands, during which tulips could sell for pounds of gold. One particular variety, the Viceroy, sold for 2500 guilders, enough to buy “four oxen, eight pigs, twelve sheep, 1,000 pounds of cheese, two tons of butter, four tons of beer, twenty-four tons of wheat, and forty-eight tons of rye.” Of course, tulip prices crashed soon after. This reflects what happened, more or less, to the housing market in 2008. -- source link
