Arguably one of the most important scientific breakthroughs of history, the group of antibiotics was more an accidental discovery than a cultivated phenomenon. In 1928, credited inventor Alexander Fleming left a petri dish uncovered in his lab. When he returned, he noticed an unknown substance growing in it. If he had been a normal person, he would have thrown out the contaminated sample. Thankfully for humankind, Fleming was a scientist, which meant he had an insatiable curiosity about random things. He took a closer look at the test and found Penicillium growing around a bacteria, repressing its growth. Many years and clinical trials later, the life-altering antibiotic was finalized. -- source link
