pomrania:Mermay 2022. VII: the chariot. Once I had a concept to draw, the sketch and lines came easily. The colours… did not. I kept changing how they were done, trying to figure out how to get the effect I wanted; and I still haven’t gotten it, but it’s been long enough and I think that aspect is as good as it can be without spending like five more hours on it. I have the whole rest of the month where I’m using these colours, I’ll likely again have a picture where the desired effect is the same, so I don’t need to get it all worked out today. The concept, for its part, came from me conflating a couple of different creatures, finding out how they actually were, and then deciding to do this anyways because it’s not like I’m using photos or writing a scientific paper. I did a bit of a reversal from the base card, where the figure at the top was the “main character”. Here, that figure is just a vaguely humanoid collection of something; it’s more or less meant to be a representation of bacteria, and its design evokes the star-patterned canopy of the original card. The two figures in front are inspired by yeti crabs, who basically cultivate bacteria in their “hair” for later eating; that’s the thing in my mind that was conflated with “barnacles having a commensal relationship with whales who take them places”. You can find my progress thread for this piece here.
