The Dark Crystal went through a very unusual and lengthy pre-production, and not every idea they made and tested made it to screen. This, for instance, was a prototype of a “miner race” mentioned in early Dark Crystal screenplays (back when it was called “The Mithra Treatment”). The puppet was built and test footage was shot in early 1980, but it ended up not being used. The idea that Thra, the world of the Dark Crystal, was hollow and cavern-filled remained. The unused plot of the unmade “Power of the Dark Crystal” sequel, as conceived by Jim Henson, would have involved a race to the center of the planet, rather like Journey to the Center of the Earth. And the current Netflix series features Gelflings with cave-cities. -- source link
