Today’s #topotuesday map is a painting of ocean depths by Tanguy de Rémur. This map dramatically depicts the submarine topography of the oceans and is based on bathymetric studies by Bruce C. Heezen and Marie Tharp. Heezen and Tharp published their first physiographic map of the North Atlantic in 1957. Their mapping was controversial at the time but helped pave the way for general acceptance of the theories of plate tectonics and continental drift. Heezen was presented the AGS Cullum Geographical Medal in 1974 by Richard H. Note in “recognition to one who has distinguished himself by geographical discoveries and by the advancement of geographical science.” 050 A-[1976] #topography #oceans #oceandepths #topographicaltuesday #maplibrariesofig #agsl #worldmap -- source link
