In reply to this post: These are the ones you mean, right? Pretty much the same ones that I thought were most successful too. I think there is a difficult balance between including a bit of caricature (which, when it’s excessive, can become ridiculous and ugly, but when it’s done right can really help to convey the essence of the character) and doing a drawing that’s too generic and only recognisable by the hair or costume. I agree that the McCoy illustration you posted looks very little like him, and in general I’ve not been all that impressed by the comic-book versions of the Doctors that I’ve seen so far because many of them seem to be in an over-elaborate (to me) ‘macho’ style that may suit superheroes with ripped abs but doesn’t really fit the ‘eccentric professor’ image of the Doctor (in any regeneration). In general I prefer the less-is-more style of artwork that was used in the sorts of comics I read as a kid (I used to draw my own comics trying to replicate this style too) although the illustrations in these do tend to be closer to the “generically attractive” and verge into the “excessively cutesy” in some cases. Anyway, I think I can work with one or other of these… -- source link
