biodiverseed: Pyrus communis ‘Clapp’s Favourite’‘Clapp’s Favourite,’ sometimes just called a Clapp Pear, is a cross between the European Pear cultivars ’Flemish Beauty’ and ’Bartlet’ a.k.a ’Williams’’ pear. It was bred by one Thaddeus Clapp, of Dorchester, Massachusetts, USA, some time before 1860. Delicious, juicy, but unable to store well, it is a pear that is likely to be found in a grandparent’s garden, and never at the grocery store. European Pear Upright growth habit Medium-sized green leaves, slightly serrated Self-sterile: needs a pollination partner Medium-sized greenish-yellow fruit with a red blush; there is a fully red-fleshed sport of this cultivar called ’Starkimson.’ One of the earliest of the high-quality eating pears, but does not store well Hardy in USDA zone 5-8 I have one growing on an espalier.
