A little bit of a troublemaker himself, and also incredibly ambitious in personality. He’s reluctant and unwilling to basically do everything and let Xue Yuan and Chu Wei enjoy the fruits of his labour after he dies, but there’s nothing he can do about it. Instead of following the plot line, he decides that even if he dies, while he’s alive, no asshole out there is going to take away what is currently his. He singlehandedly deals with rebellions and has informants hidden and buried around every single person, so he always knows what’s going on. His body is really weak however; he gets a cold whenever he’s outside for too long, and any emotional upheavals will send him into a bloody coughing fit.At first, he pits himself against Xue Yuan, curious to see if this mad, rebellious dog would be tamed by him, and then regrets it after because it seems he’s really tamed Xue Yuan, and overly so, because the man can think about nothing but him. He gets a sexuality crisis, then an existential one because he’s dying soon. In the end, however, he really does love the way Xue Yuan dotes on him, knows him so well and is there to care for him, even if he (defiantly) thinks he doesn’t need Xue Yuan.His illness, surprisingly, takes a turn for the better and he lives past the mark he’s supposed to die at, and Xue Yuan doesn’t seem any more eager to take over the throne than before, happy enough to sit at Gu Yuan Bai’s side. And Chu Wei, the other lead in this story, barely gets any airtime.2. 薛远 Xue Yuan - Also known as Xue Jiu Yao, starts out viewing the sickly emperor as an enemy, someone he can manipulate and play around in his hands, but is bullied instead by Gu Yuan Bai. The son of a reputable general, he’s forced to directly serve the emperor, and from wanting to create trouble and defy Gu Yuan Bai 24/7, he starts worrying about how sick he is, how cold he is, if he’s warm, if he’s still hungry, if he’s hurt and more. Turns really betrayed and sad when Gu Yuan Bai sets him free and basically chases him away/fires him as his guard so he can do ‘greater things’, after Gu Yuan Bai basically rejects his feelings. But he’s nothing if not persistent, grumbly, glowery and obsessive. In the end, his feelings do move Gu Yuan Bai, and he faithfully serves right at Gu Yuan Bai’s side in all ways.Other Things I Like in This NovelIt’s super satisfying to see the way Gu Yuan Bai consolidate power and scheme and bulldoze his way through evil officials, nefarious plots and alliances with the enemy, of brothers with second motives and more!! He’s sick af but he’s no weakling!!Gu Yuan Bai forced Xue Yuan to carry him on his back once to show him who’s in power, and then Xue Yuan realizes that he really likes carrying Gu Yuan Bai, so much so that Gu Yuan Bai is like ???? There’s a bit of a drug story going on as well in the back and it’s really interesting to see who was involved!Not a plot that I like per se but one that I found interesting - Basically Gu Yuan Bai’s brother, a prince, realizes he has a crush on Gu Yuan Bai and then keeps a painting of the man in his room - He’s found out and Gu Yuan Bai flies into a huge rageTransmigration plots tend to be 50-70% comedy, but I really like that this one is 80% serious and ruthless and has a darker undercurrent of politics, and that Gu Yuan Bai is honestly not content with just sitting around and waiting for doomsday, or just trying to pander to who he thinks are the main leads - he’s there to live out his life one way or another no matter how it is.
