Most of my pro-choice life is not very glamorous — between clinic defense and demonstrations, I’ve stood in the rain, caught a nasty sunburn, lost feeling in my freezing cold fingers, you name it. This photograph was that one odd moment when TIME Magazine brought me up to New York for a photo shoot related to a cover story on pro-choice activism. The photographer told me to look determined. I was five weeks pregnant and nobody knew.When I walked out, I called my dear friend Steph Herold (who was getting photographed later that day) and told her what to expect — and that I was pregnant.
