minoritiesinpublishing: [Don’t forget to tweet at @MinoritiesinPub about what you got from Tananarive’s episode for a chance to win a copy of her new book with Prime Books, Ghost Summer: Stories. I read it! It’s good!] “One of the things my mother told me when I was a kid that really helped in moments of isolation if I was the only Black kid in the class was, ‘People of color around the world are the majority. So don’t think that your experience here is indicative of what it’s like out in the world.’ And really that perspective was so helpful for me, just to feel a sense of belonging and pride, not superior to anybody, but just like, Uh-huh well okay fine. This is just how this looks in this classroom but around the world brown skin is predominant.” One of my favorite takeaways from this episode was a lesson Tananarive got from her mother of knowing that while you may feel like the only one in your current space, know that you are not necessarily a minority. -- source link
