sumthing-peculiar: legendsofsomething: harrypotterconfessions: I don’t understand why Snapefen just can’t seem to get the reality of the situation, even almost 10 years after the fact. Snape was NOT a good person. He was spiteful and a bully. He may have been on the good side, but that was only because of Lily’s death. If Lily had not died, he would still be a Death Eater. And he never would have become one on the first place is he wasn’t constantly bullied by people like James Potter and his asshole friends. The point was no one is completely good or evil. But I guess nuance just goes over some people’s head. 1) You say “constantly bullied” despite the canon fact that both of them would periodically attack each other, similar to Malfoy and Harry, which has been addressed not only in the series but by Rowling herself.2) He joined the Death Eaters because he was fascinated with Dark magic and he openly despised muggleborns (save for one). He came into Hogwarts believing himself superior to Muggles and muggleborns before he even met James and co on the train. But I guess context goes over some people’s heads. THIS. Yes- Snape is carefully placed in Harry’s world to show him (and us) that people are not either good or a death eater. No, James’ treatment of Severus at 16 is not an adequate defence of the behaviour of a grown man towards children in his care decades later! Leave aside the enormous complexities of his relationship with Harry and look at his treatment of Neville. Neville, a kid whose parents were tortured because of Voldemort, suffers daily mental torture at Snape’s hands. If Snape was so anti-Voldemort, how could he possibly treat Neville in that way after all he’s been through? The answer is in the original confession. And in Snape’s final declaration. All he did, all he was, ‘always’ was driven by his obsession with Lily. He could care less about good and evil. And that’s why I have a really hard time with people defending him. -- source link
