#104 Cubone / #105 Marowak / #115 KangaskhanCubone and Marowak don’t evolve into Kangaskhan, but it’s been pretty clear for a long time that they are related…somehow. Which is why we decided to redesign these three together.Cubone and Marowak are based on kangaroos. They wear found skulls as helmets, and rib bones as clubs and boomerangs. The cracks below the eye sockets of their skull helmets mimic tear tracks to emphasize their theme of loss.Kangaskhan is based on a tree-kangaroo, a species of kangaroo more distantly related to the ones we are more familiar with. They are smaller, but stockier and fluffier—and I liked the idea of basing the bigger Pokémon on the smaller animal. Its fur is placed to imitate some armour, but it is overall designed to look more motherly. There are several parallels between the design of Cubone/Marowak and Kangaskhan. The colors are obvious, but they also all have the same eyes and battle scars on their foreheads. Marowak also has a bone necklace the mimics Kangaskhan’s neck fur; a spike on its back (Kanga has several); and a vestigial pouch. -- source link
