ultrafacts: Jane Crawford was one tough lady, she was operated on with no benefit of anesthesia, only an oral dose of opium and several attendants to hold her down. It was reported she sang hymns and repeated Psalms during the procedure. The operation was done by Ephraim McDowell & it took 25 minutes. Crawford made an uncomplicated recovery. She returned to her home in Green County 25 days after the operation and lived another 32 years. This was the first recorded successful removal of an ovarian tumor in the world.
