My mom taught me many life lessons. ‘Always rub salt on a wine stain’, 'good manners cost nothing’, 'cheaters never win’… but the thing she drummed into me above all else was that you never wear pantyhose with an open sandal.Well, okay, not quite. Women of her generation did it all the time after all, but somewhere between Friends and Sex in the City, the sight of a reinforced toe poking out of a dainty stiletto heel became a crime akin to Nazi-era complicity! For many long years, I slavishly followed this mantra, hiding the shame of my hosiery behind covered toes, or sporting bare legs with more exquisite foot wear.And then I realized that toes-in-hose made my heart skip a beat, and the only thing sexier than a pretty foot in a dainty heel was a pretty nylon-covered foot in a dainty heel. So now I no longer case about the “received wisdom”, and you know what? The looks I get from other women are not looks of judgement or disdain.
