Last night I was trying to figure out a style to use in illustrating my Fifth Doctor and Tristan stories. I was looking for a cartoon/comic-book-type style that would be quick to draw (as opposed to my previous drawings that took 30 mins-3 hours each), was neither too caricature-y nor too cutesy and somehow managed to capture their essence. I’ve no idea whether any of these fit the bill, and the first two sheets include some drawings that are clearly and obviously terrible. Some of the sketches are more caricature-y and some are attempting to be a little more realistic. He has the sort of face that definitely benefits from a ‘less is more’ approach but I think the last one has taken this a bit too far and become too generic. I don’t want to do illustrations where my characters are only recognisable by their hair…I guess “capturing the essence” of a character is probably a very subjective thing - I’ve seen quite a few drawings of the Fifth Doctor, including published comic books, that, while technically accomplished, really don’t seem to me to get to the essential of the character. (The comic books often make him too ‘macho’-looking which to me is really offputting because one of the things I like best about the character is that he is not a macho, tough-guy type.) So I think it’s quite probable that my drawings won’t capture what other people might see as the essence of the character either.I would welcome any comments - do be honest and say they are all terrible if that’s what you think, and if you think any are non-terrible then do let me know which one(s)! -- source link
