The Hell Courtesan Seikei (late 19th century) The Hell Courtesan (Jigoku Dayū) was an especially popular depiction between the Edo and Meiji periods. Her robe is decorated by an Emma-Ō in the centre, who is one of the Ten Kings of Hell. The kimono also depicts horned demons, who carried out the punishments after the sinners were sentenced. The obi on the other hands is decorated with a bodhisattva with attendants descending from heaven, whose role was that of a saviour of the deceased.
