‘Temporary image of the hand of St. Gregory the Great’ This portrayal of a St. Gregory’s relic, located in the local cathedral’s museum, fully embeds the dichotomy within the act of painting something kept in a container to last as a symbol over the centuries by taking its “image” to the most inhospitable environment such as the streets. Thus, the idea of preservation and its strength symbolically fade away over the inevitability of time and its effect over matter, even the work of art. The last act of such operation is represented by this published picture, a relic itself, although digital, which will survive immaculate over the physical work.
