trans-mom: trans-mom: It’s October! That means it’s time for my comprehensive list for everything that seems Halloween or October-ish! From haunted houses, to demons, to mysteries, to witches, anime of all types are on this list! Key:Underline: Link to summary* = on netflix as of October 2020** = on crunchyroll as of October 2020*** = on hulu as of October 2020(Free) = on Tubi as of October 2020 Bold = a show I personally like!Italics = a brief comment about the show 7 Seeds (rape, torture, murder)* - You ever just wake up and suddenly the human race is extinct and you live in a post apocalyptic world with mutant plants and beasts around every corner. Yeah, I know, typical childhood experience. Not so much a horror, but it has it’s moments. Ajin (tw: violence, blood, gore)* - mysterious shadow like beings are projected from their human counterparts and possess the ability to cause mayhem. the Japanese government knows about them and thinks they can harness their power… Akira (tw: body horror, murder, blood, gore)***(Also Free) - the legend itself, no list of this type is complete without Akira. street gangs, olympics, government projects….growths? Alien Nine (tw: violence) - sending little girls to fight aliens? what could go wrong? The Ancient Magus’ Bride (tw: slavery, abuse, kidnapping, maybe body horror)** - a young girl is being sold at auction, scared and alone in a cage, she is surprised when a creature purchases her to be his “bride.” In reality, this series becomes a fantasy romance between the two while the creature teaches her how to use magic. Another (tw: violence, gore, blood, child death, dolls)** - Final Destination: The Anime Aoi Bungaku Series - short stories Ayakashi - Parasitic organisms grant someone super powers, but at a price. Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror - short stories Beautiful Bones** - Mysteries abound! The rich and affluent Sakurako loves “beautiful bones,” which creates an interest in solving mysteries Berserk (tw: blood, gore, violence, body horror, rape, etc) - the famed story of Guts and his adventures through war and politics Black Butler: Book of Circus // Black Butler: Book of Murder (tw: murder, child abuse)** - you probably know of Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) by now, so instead of recommending it I recommend the third anime and it’s OVA. Ciel Phantomhive lost his parents ages ago and entered into a pact with a demon to get revenge on their murderers. With his large fortune and incredible intellect, he works with the Queen to solve the mysteries that even Scotland Yard can’t handle. The original season and Book of Circus are on Crunchyroll. Blue Gender (tw: violence, blood, gore?) - bugs eating everything is a little scarier than you’d think Blood+ (tw: blood, csa) - vampires in the modern day with swords Blood-C (tw: blood - lots of blood, gore)*** - sighhh, school life is hard! trying to balance homework, friendships, and slaying monsters?? can take a toll on a girl! Blood: The Last Vampire (tw: blood, gore) - a US military base in Japan is plagued by random deaths. the military decides to send in Saya, a famed vampire hunter Boogiepop Phantom (tw: death) - a string of murders, many disappearances, something’s lurking out there… Calamity of a Zombie Girl (tw: blood, violence, sexualization kinda)** - Students find two mummies hidden away in their university. Waking them up isn’t recommended. Castlevania (tw: blood, murder, vampire shit)* - Yes, that Castlevania. Yes, Netflix adapted it. Enjoy~ Corpse Princess Part 1 and Part 2 (tw: murder, blood, gore)*** - honestly, click the links for a description, I’m not sure how to give a small blurb about it Dantalian no Shoka (tw: murder)** - After the death of his grandfather, Hugh Anthony teams up with a young girl to tackle the mysteries and monsters born from magical literature. Deadman Wonderland (tw: gore, violence, nudity) - After the brutal mass murder of his class, Ganta Igarashi has the murder pinned on him as the sole survivor, and is sentenced to a prison that puts prisoners through torturous games. Death Note (tw: murder)* (Free) - I assure you, it’s better than Netflix wants you to think. Demon Prince Enma (tw: extreme violence) - Enma hunts and exterminates demons escaping to earth. Denpa Teki na Kanojo (tw: suicide, violence) - What would you do if a random girl showed up on day and insisted she was your knight in a previous life? Descendants of Darkness - Two shinigami in charge of making sure souls pass through the cycle of life naturally have their days ruined by a vampire. Devils’ Line - Tsukasa was rescued by a devil who belongs to a special task force meant for dealing with other devils. Devilman: Crybaby (tw: everything under the sun. seriously)* - Incredible animation, incredible soundtrack, great voice acting, this modern installation of a classic series has everything going for it. The content is very disturbing though. Dusk Maiden of Amnesia (tw: death, child death, I want to say over sexualization) - Niya is friends with a ghost! And, he’s trying to help her discover the details of her death. The manga is better and it ends with him deciding to be with the ghost girl forever, so yeah. Elfen Lied (tw: blood, gore, murder, child abuse, over sexualization)*** - the first ten minutes are fucking brutal. after that it’s basically over sexual slice of life. The Empire of Corpses (tw: death, zombie stuff kinda, dismemberment) - in an alternate version of the 19th century, corpse reanimation tech has revolutionized labor around the globe. Our main character wishes to uncover the lost findings of Victor Frankenstein, who is said to have not only brought someone back to life, but brought back their soul in this movie based off of a Project Itoh novel. Ergo Proxy (tw: murder, violence)*** (Free) - a post apocalyptic world where society lives in small, domed, mechanized communities. Humans aren’t born, they’re manufactured. Re-L is an investigator looking into a series of murders. It appears a human may not have done them…. Future Diary (tw: blood, gore, death, child abuse, csa, rape, sex, child death, ableism possibly)** - what if you had a diary that filled up with everything that’s going to happen? what’d you use it for? gambling? better grades? the betterment of mankind? a sick game where you must murder other diary holders concocted by a dying god? choices, choices. GANTZ (tw: explicit sex, extreme violence, domestic abuse, death, suicide, bullying) - After dying, Kei and Kanto wake up in a room full of strangers who are tasked to kill aliens. Ga-Rei -Zero- (tw: death/murder, can’t remember the rest)** - In Japan, there exists a government agency known as the Supernatural Disaster Countermeasures Division (SDCD), whose duty is to protect the citizens from creatures unseen. They are able to dispatch these monsters swiftly and without alerting the general public. But currently, they face a different challenge: the betrayal of one of their own. (description from MAL) Ghost Hound (tw: child abuse/trauma, death) - a child taken hostage in a condemned hospital….the trauma that’s left behind can only haunt you… Ghost Hunt - come follow the Shibuya Psychic Research group while they investigate a haunted school building Ghost Stories (tw: average haunted school stuff but let’s say the WHOLE spectrum just in case)** - this show is famous for its dub. If you chose to watch the dub watch out for racism, antisemitism, and homophobia. If you watch the original Japanese it’s an average horror story with few highlights. The Girl From the Other Side: Siuil, a Run - a young girl lives in another world with a demon caretaker. the day she decides to leave is the day she learns the reasons for her circumstances. Gosick (tw: war, child abuse, racism I think?)** - Move over Benedict Cucumberpatch and Robert Downy Jr. the real Sherlock Holmes has arrived. Gyo (tw: body horror, death, gore, unsanitary, sex) - fish have legs now. gashunk. Hellsing // Helsing Ultimate (tw: nazis, death, blood, gore)** - undead dude kills undead nazis High School of the Dead (tw: typical zombie stuff, over sexualization)*** - .…it’s literally zombies and boobs. like, it’s more boob than zombie. really popular, but most of you will probably be put off by the sexual stuff. Hitsuji no Uta (tw: vampire stuff) - guy turns out to be a vampire, as is his long lost sister. has to figure out what’s going on with that. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni // Higurashi no Naki Koro ni Kai (tw: blood, gore, murder, suicide, child death, child abuse, over sexualization, hallucinations, ableism possibly, your very typical anime tropes)*** - A small village has a legend about a curse. Numerous people are dead with mysterious circumstances. Keiichi thinks his friends want him dead. He keeps hearing mysterious noises and feels like he’s being watched. Could this be the curse? Higurashi: When They Cry Gou (tw: likely the same as above)*** - this is a remake of Higurashi done by Passione. It’s currently airing so trigger warnings are a hard call, but it’s likely to be similar to the listing before this. Hell Girl (tw: everything, child abuse, domestic abuse, murder, bullying, rape) - are you feeling upset? hurt? abused? want to take revenge? they say there’s a web site that’ll help you achieve your revenge and drag them to hell. The catch? Your soul will also be damned to hell. Is the price worth it? fourth iteration is on Crunchyroll Hyouka** - the Kyoani take on solving mysteries Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (tw: death, blood, police state, terrorism, psychological stuff, hallucinations)** (Free) - a crushing police state and an officer questioning his place in it Junji Ito Collection (tw: there’s not really any gore, but body horror and just about everything else is there)** - The master of terror is animated! Please keep your hopes low, animation can not replicate manga perfectly. Kaidan Restaurant (unaware of any triggers) - a fun children’s show about ghosts stories King of Thorn (tw: death, blood, violence, rape I think?) - a scary virus that petrifies people made humanity decide to freeze some humans for the sake of preserving the species. Now that the frozen candidates are waking up and witnessing the horrible monsters wandering the halls, they may be the only remaining humans on earth. King’s Game (tw: everything. seriously.)** - let’s play a game of simon says, but if you don’t do as simon says, you die. it’s really not good. Le Portrait de Petit Cossette (tw: hallucinations) - creepy fuckin’ dolls mannn Little Witch Academia TV (tw: too cute?)* - beautiful animation, beautiful music, great voice acting, it all comes together to tell this light hearted tale about witches going to school. Loups=Garous (tw: death, child death child abuse, racism I think) - After a virus wiped out much of humanity, society lives sheltered, only really interacting through the internet and technology. When suddenly kids start turning up dead, a mystery starts to unfold. If you enjoy the anime even a little bit, look up the book! The book is GREAT and one of my favorite novels. Mayonaka no Occult Koumuin** - Civil servants resolve issues with the occult. Mairimashita! Iruma-kun (no tw, airs this Oct) - You ever just get taken to the demon world and are forced to go to school there? Wtf man. Mayoiga / The Lost Village (tw: death, hallucinations, bullying, ableism possibly)** - Want to escape society? A mysterious village is welcoming you to get away. ‘Cuz that sounds legit, right? Mermaid Forest (can’t remember triggers) - two buddies wander the earth hunting mermaids to eat their skin as a method to gain immortality Mnemosyne (tw: sex, violence, death) - Immortal investigators have to avoid being ate by angels, assassinated, and drinking too much booze. Mob Psycho 100 (tw: violence)** - a kid named Mob has a hard time expressing himself, but he’s a very powerful esper. Mononoke (tw: most things)** - traditional Japanese horror Monster (tw: murder, death, child abuse, blood) - So, you’re a renowned brain surgeon and you have to choose to either help an old politician or a child gun shot victim. Chose wisely. One choice may keep a true monster alive. Mushishi (tw: eye trauma possibly, scopophobia maybe)** - Follow mushi researcher Ginko in his travels in this slow paced fantasy. Noragami** - a minor god intends to become THE god Norageki! (tw: violence, don’t recall much else) - a prison of the future leads to a mystery Occult Academy (tw: violence, can’t remember much)** - aliens invade the earth in 2012, so time travelers have gone back to 1999 to a school that studies the occult. Paranoia Agent (tw: violence, hallucinations, suicide, murder, bullying) - someone’s going around hitting people with a baseball bat….the fuck’s with that? Parasyte -the maxim- (tw: blood, gore, violence, murder/death, etc)*** (this one is actually on Hulu, Netflix, and Crunchyroll) - what if an alien fell from the sky and embedded itself into your hand and needed to feed while fucking up other aliens that want it dead, all the while dragging you along? wouldn’t that be fucked up? Perfect Blue (tw: stalking, murder, hallucinations, rape) - Being a well known idol would be rad right? Nothing can go wrong with that right? Absolutely perfect life right? Pet Shop of Horrors (can’t remember triggers) - sometimes a gremlin isn’t the only weird thing you find at a shop The Promised Neverland** (tw: child abuse, child death, manipulation) - This house is all they’ve ever known. Mother is all they’ve ever known. It’s happy, it’s fun. Though, sometimes the other kids do go away and never come back. I wonder what’s on the other side of the fence we’re not supposed to go near. Puella Magi Madoka Magica (tw: violence, child death)* - the world is haunted by beings known as witches, girls in Mitakihara town make contracts with the cute mascot Kyubey to get magical powers to stop them. However, the appearance of a mysterious transfer girl with endless hate for Kyubey seems to be less than impressed than the other girls. If you have never actually watched this already, time to learn about entropy. the movies are better imo. Psychic Detective Yakumo (tw: death)*** - Saitou Yakumo has the ability to talk to the spirits of the deceased. He works with the police to solve supernatural mysteries and finds himself wrapped up in a much bigger plot. Psycho-Pass (tw: blood, gore, death, rape, drugs, etc)*** - in the future, the police are able to measure your brain waves and determine if you are likely to become a criminal and prevent crimes before they happen. what will this dystopian future do when someone who’s likelihood to commit crimes can not be read as they commit murder in front of them? Red Garden** - Four students in New York are brought together by the death of an acquaintance. Requiem from the Darkness - Momosuke has traveled to Japan to collect stories, but Momosuke finds that his newest friends may be the stories he’s sought after all along Sankarea (tw: child abuse, child rape, death, blood, over sexulization) - Chihiro is obsessed with zombies. He’s been trying to figure out how to make them for ages. Then he meets Rea, the abused daughter of the affluent Sankarea family. What happens next will warm your heart….. School-Live!** - You ever just love school so much you never want to go home? Or, you just never want to go home in general? Say…why does no one ever go home? Serial Experiments Lain (tw: suicide, anxiety, depression, death, child death)** - A bizarre take on our interactions with the internet/digital world. A psychological thriller with horrific elements. Seraph of the End (tw: abuse, murder/death, blood and gore)*** - A virus came and wiped out adult human life. Then, monsters materialized and started killing the remainder. Seeing this as their time to rise, the vampires came out of the shadows and took the remaining human life into their protection, under the condition they are obedient food generators. Yuichiro lives in one of the last human cities and trains with it’s army to take to take revenge on the vampires who hurt his brother and save people from monsters. How will he react when he comes to learn, not only that his brother has become a vampire, but that there’s a destructive monstrosity growing inside him? The second season is really good in my opinion. Shiki (tw: gore, blood, death/murder, child death, vampire shit)*** - What if vampires were just like us?? Speed Grapher (tw: murder, blood, sex, rape)** - a photographer finds the story of the century and consequently finds himself running from murderous rich people and the ability to blow stuff up with his camera Supernatural: The Animation (don’t remember any tw) - yes, that supernatural. yes, it got an anime. yes, it’s on this list due to relevance. no, don’t bother with it. unless you’re into that kind of thing I guess. Tokko (tw: extreme violence, blood, death, nudity/sex, abuse) - a special police unit that deals with “inhuman” cases Tokyo Ghoul (tw: blood, gore, torture, death/murder, just like….everything)*** - that series half the people you follow are into that isn’t Attack on Titan. Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpuchou Tou (tw: murder, violence)** - High school kids battle demons to save Tokyo. Tweeny Witches - A preteen girl gets sent to a world full of magic and witches. Umezo Kazuo no Noroi (tw: blood, body horror, gore kinda, extreme violence, typical haunted house shit) - A girl starts having intense nightmares while another group of kids go into a haunted house. Umineko no Naku Koro ni (tw: child abuse, murder, death, blood, gore) - from the same people that did Higurashi, a mansion murder mystery surrounded by the legend of a witch. Never had a second season so it doesn’t have a resolution. Un-Go (tw: murder, blood, hallucinations)** - “Defeated Detective” Shinjurou Yuuki is one of the best investigators in post-war Japan, but his reputation is in tatters and he constantly loses his thunder to his rival Rinroku Kaishou. None of this has stopped him from trying to solve mysteries and better the world. Though, now that he’s back from his long trip from out of the country, he has a new partner named Inga, and some people are questioning if Inga is actually….human. If you can get your hands on this, watch the prequel OVA too! Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories (tw. ranges, be prepared for anything)** - quick few minutes horror stories Vampire Hunter D (tw: blood, vampire shit) - in a future dominated by demons and vampires, a desperate girl turns to a vampire hunter for help Vampire Knight (Free) - shoujo, more sappy than scary, Has vampires. Wasurenagumo - Please don’t love the spider girl… Wicked City (tw: sex, sexual abuse, explicit violence) (Free) - The human world sits parallel to the demon world, and their long standing peace treaty is about to end. A human and an assassin from the demon world are tasked with protecting the only person who can seal a new peace treaty. Zombieland Saga** (tw: body horror, maybe a bit of blood and gore, mistreatment of children) - girls brought back to life to form an amazing idol group. please ignore the arm that’s barely attached, that’s normal.
