ruthbancroftgarden: Echinocereus viereckii ssp. morricaliiEchinocereus is a genus in the Cactus Family native to the U.S. Southwest and Mexico. The species are notable for their large showy flowers, but they show great variation in their spination, from super-spiny to nearly spineless. Echinocereus viereckii subspecies morricalii is at the minimally-spined end of the spectrum, though there are forms of it that have much longer spines than the one pictured. The flowers are truly sensational: magenta-pink on the outside, fading to red at the throat, complemented by the pale yellow pollen and green stigma at the center.
