withwordsau: Happy International Women’s Day! It’s International Women’s Day, which means it’s time to celebrate the awesome women in our lives, remember those who came before us and recommit to our fight for equal rights. Although many of us are lucky enough to enjoy financial stability, equitable partnerships and personal safety it important to acknowledge that: 1. Not every woman has the same opportunities or security2. Our fight for equal rights continues A 2014 Australian survey found that on average women earn 18.2% less than their male colleagues; that 1 in 2 mothers had experienced workplace discrimination; and that domestic violence was still the leading preventable cause of death, disability and illness amongst women. This inequality, discrimination and violence is even more severe for women of colour and trans women. Today, and everyday, we must recognise that our experiences as women are diverse and that real feminism is intersectional. From microaggressions and gas-lighting to racism and transphobia; women all over the world face different kinds of inequality and oppression. So take a moment to celebrate and don’t forget that gender inequality is still very real, especially for those women who do not enjoy the privileges that come with being white and cis. Do not contribute gender discrimination by attempting to invalidate the experiences of other women. Listen, learn and love. Let’s continue the good fight for all women’s rights! #internationalwomensday [I wrote the original version of this post for my Facebook page]. -- source link
