Jenifer Neils, author of Goddess and Polis: The Panathenaic Festival of Ancient Athens (Princeton University Press;1992), suggests that this scene of women spinning and weaving depicts the actual creation of the new, richly-woven peplos presented to Athene each year at the culmination of the Panathenaic festival. -- source link
