andrewfishman: Simon Faithfull, “Shy Fountain,” 2012 An absolutely adorable idea for an installation. This fountain is hooked up to a series of motion detectors in the area so that when there is no one around, it spouts water four feet in the air, and is lit from beneath so it looks particularly beautiful at night. However, when someone approaches, it suddenly stops, the light turns out, and the only evidence it exists is a puddle of water. If you were to sit perfectly still, the fountain would, little by little, get the courage to spout at its full potential. It’s easy to anthropomorphize this fountain, because it reflects so much of ourselves. Many of us feel that we can really be ourselves when we’re alone, and that’s when we really shine. In particular, shy people shut down around others, much like this fountain. And, unless we’re patient, many of us miss out on the hidden, wonderful personalities of shy people, just like we miss this fountain. -- source link
