Lyme disease can become very serious, it can infect the nervous system and cause neurological problems especially in young children who are often bitten on the head or the neck, undiagnosed it can cause chronic health issues that mimic other diseases. Without safe prophylactic measures beyond trying to minimize contact w ticks, this has driven people who have had lyme disease, have chronic effects from mass-disseminated lyme disease infection, or people who believe they have chronic lyme disease to go to quack doctors and undergo unsafe, unapproved medical treatment in an attempt to stop suffering. I work at a daycare, and we are REQUIRED by LAW to have those kids vaccinated, but somehow some parents find ways around these requirements and end up giving these preventable diseases to everyone else.I was given the mumps by one of these kids whose parents either didn’t care enough to get the kid vaccinated or fell for that Jenny McCarthy bullshit. The mumps is a miserable illness and I am damn lucky that it was a fairly minor case. But minor or not it is still beyond painful to swallow and my entire right cheek swelled up to double it’s size. It was awful. I had to go to the ER on fucking Thanksgiving Day because some parents decided they knew better than every doctor practicing medicine who urges people to vaccinate their kids.VACCINATE. My sister and I had our kids pretty close together. Like my oldest and her oldest are a few months apart and my youngest and her 2nd kid are like a week apart. So we both went through the whole “gearing up for baby” bit together. This included a lot of conversations about things like breast or bottle, cry it out or Ferber method or co-sleep, nursery colors……and vaccines. Now you would think that vaccines wouldn’t be a part of those conversations because those others are mainly choices and vaccines are like…..mandatory, right? No no no no. Apparently not. See, while I was reading factual, how to type guides, she picked up Jenny McCarthy’s book. And thats where it got weird. She kept arguing with me about vaccines. How she didn’t want me to regret giving them to my kid because she couldn’t stand it if her son was never able to say I love you or look her in the eye and why didn’t I understand that and join her on her anti-vax crusade. And thats when I realized for the first time how very different our parenting journeys were gonna be. To her, the anti Vax thing was fear of autism. Not because autism would harm her kid, but because autism would harm her ability to get what she wanted out of the kid. To me, I feared anti-vax attitude because it could kill my kid. She would rather have a dead kid than a kid that couldn’t give her the love and attention that she wanted, how she wanted. And I mean, she’s still that way. Both of are oldest are 12 and she still hasn’t let any of her 6 kids choose their Halloween costumes or choose their outfits on school days or choose how to cut their hair or what color their hair should be or…….well anything. Her kids aren’t kids. They’re objects she desired so she could play house.Anti vaxxers fears started because of an autism panic and, knowing now that my son might have autism alongside his adhd, I hate them for it. I hate them for it so much because that kid my sister feared for so much she was willing to risk her son dying instead of having is my kid. He doesn’t look you in the eyes and I’m cool with it because I’m right there with him on that. He rarely says “I love you” but you know what he does say all the time? “Be safe”. He says it every day when he gets out of the car and every time we leave the house and every time he says goodnight. He can’t stand certain types of clothing or certain foods. And he is still my son. He is still my kid. And to think that some people would rather have had him die when we all got whooping cough 2 years ago than have him be who he is? Its……enraging. Infuriating. Cruel. And I think that’s a big part of tje conversation that gets ignored when people talk about the anti vaxxers. It got started because of serious ableism.
