letsgostealthelouvre:historyarchaeologyartefacts:This small carving of a water bird was created 33,000 years ago. The sculpted piece of mammoth ivory, found in the Hohle Fels cave in Germany, may be the earliest representation of a bird. [900x675] More info in a 2003 BBC article here; I couldn’t find where the bird is now held/exhibited. (Probably the Museum of Prehistory at Blaubeuren but I can’t confirm.) [Description: A small scrap of ivory about the size of a person’s little finger, carved in the likeness of a bird with a bulbous body, wide tail, and outstretched neck. It appears to be swimming and there is speculation it may have been a diving bird such as a cormorant. It’s pitted and chipped and worn, but very identifiably a manmade sculpture of a bird.] -- source link
