robotsandfrippary: teaboot:Shana knows exactly what she’s doing and I’m proud of her My mom used to be addicted to these shows and would constantly say how “nice” the girls looked after they got their make-over. The kids looked so so so uncomfortable and so sad. I can’t imagine getting dragged onto a show like that and be stripped of my personal choice and identity- then have a bunch of strangers put pressure on me to change by saying basically “Now you fit into society and we like you.” I got in a huge argument with my mom(I was in my 20′s at the time and goth) about how insidious and cruel the program was. It took me asking her if she wanted me to do something like that, to take away what made me who I am, for her to understand that no, this kind of thing is NOT okay. the idea that someone, even her, would do this to me made her realize, no, this is abusive. It was no different than the bullying I’d taken growing up. BUT.There was one show, and I don’t know which it was, that did the REVERSE. The kid got a make-over to look “normal” and the parents got make-overs to look Goth and Punk. IT WAS AMAZING. Some of the kids were really uncomfortable/embarrassed by their parents and some were so filled with joy to have their parent willing to do this for them- or with them. I think those parents probably learned a LOT about why their kid is who they are that day. -- source link
