#ShootBack Day 1: On August 9th in Ferguson, Missouri Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer. The reasons why and if it was justified are debatable as a large public outcry denounced it as foul play and police brutality. This was around the time I, a young photographer, had had my camera for about two years and gotten into shooting on a regular basis as a hobby doing street photography while also gaining experience shooting for pay and my college newspaper as well. I heard of rallies and protests announced nationwide including Atlanta and went out to the first one at the CNN Center. As any photographer would, I brought my camera but I wasn’t expecting to use it much as I expected to be paying more attention to speakers, marching and hearing from others. I had attended only one similar event before this, which was a march for Trayvon Martin. I brought my camera there too but didn’t fair so well with it which is why I was less concerned this time. Social media was all a buzz with flyers for the rally, but I wasn’t sure of who or how many people to expect..Project #ShootBack is an informal photojournal account of my experience as a young person, photographer and activist leading up to my goal of traveling to Selma, Alabama in March to photograph the 50th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday.” Thousands, including the president will be coming to town. I’m currently raising money for this trip and my activism efforts in general here:http://www.gofundme.com/ArtandActivism -- source link
