Gamal Abdel Nasser, ruler of Egypt, is greeted by a crowd after announcing that he would nationalize the Suez Canal in 1956. This act, widely seen as a blow against imperialism and for self-sufficiency, was followed by the Suez Crisis, a convoluted incident in which England and France incited Israel to invade Egypt so that they could reclaim the canal. Even though Nasser was really bailed out by American intervention in the crisis, he was able to present himself as a bold opponent of imperialism and emerge as the most prominent leader in the Arab world. -- source link
