domhnal-gleeson:In college, I did a semester on AItheory. There was a thought experimentthey gave us. It’scalled “Mary in the black and whiteroom.” Mary is a scientist, and herspecialist subject is colour. Sheshe knows everything there is toknow about it. The wavelengths. The neurological effects. Everypossible property colour can have. But she lives in a black and whiteroom. She was born there, and raisedthere. And she can only observethe outside world on a black andwhite monitor. All her knowledgeof colour is second-hand. Then one day - someone opens thedoor. And Mary walks out. And shesees a blue sky. And at thatmoment, she learns something thatall her studies could never tellher. She learns what it feels liketo see colour. An experience thatcan not be taught, or conveyed. The thought experiment was to showthe students the difference betweena computer and a human mind. Thecomputer is Mary in the black andwhite room. The human is when shewalks out.Domhnall Gleesonas Caleb Smith in Ex Machina (2015) -- source link
