gunhilde:15th century graffiti, Carlisle CastleThis remarkable and unique collection of carvings inside the keep of Carlisle Castle have sometimes been attributed to prisoners held there, but were more likely made by guards or members of the castle garrison. Very little is known for certain about the carvings. Some are little more than stick drawings of animals, while others show great attention to detail and artistic talent. The carvings have been dated to the later 15th century based on the inclusion of specific heraldic symbols, including the boar badge of Richard III and the white rose of the House of York. Other carvings are more obscure. Some appear to tell stories, while others depict popular saints, or contain more general religious imagery. -- source link
